Majicjack is the new VOIP service that is available just about everywhere such as as Wal-Mart, Walgreens, RadioShack and Best Buy to name a few. I’m sure you have seen the many commercials and it looks just so magical. The inventor is Daniel Borislow founder of YMAX Communication Corporation. It costs $39.95 for a USB dongle and one year of service. The service is $19.95 per year. It works with the following operating systems Windows XP, Vista and Intel Macs.

How to install it: You just plug the Majicjack dongle into a standard analog telephone. Then plug the dongle into a USB port on your computer. The Embedded software automatically installs. After you sign up and receive a phone number you can start making and receiving calls. You can even select an area code of your choosing from a list. This is great when you want to give the impression that your telephone number is local; but not all area codes are available. It’s reported that in the future, users will be able to Port a number. I’m not too sure how this will work (maybe some more of that Majic).

Now that the installation is out of the way did MajicJack work the way that the TV commercials claimed it would? My experience in the last 6 months that I have tried to use it, no it did not. Put it simply, I have hung up the phone on MajicJack. Here are some the reasons:

  1. False rings

  2. Dropped calls

  3. Noise on the line when you are making and or receiving calls.

The big problem I had with Majicjack. it only rang 2 to 2.5 rings before my calls would go to voice mail; really that isn’t enough time to answer a call unless you always next to the phone. My wife was constantly after me about not being able to answer the phone ( I am a telephone man so of course we only have one phone jack) so I finally called Customer Service which you know is totally time consuming and really worse than placing bamboo up your fingernails but I did it. To explain just how painful it was I am going to give you the call.

The unedited transcript of a conversation with Majicjack’s Customer Services/ live Chat Agents (which by the way I find strange you can’t telephone an organization that sells telephone services via telephone).
